Some random shots me and my boy Eric got in one day after installing his CF diffuser… One of my favorite cars… it just screams his personality.

His name was Rusty Slammington

As with most, Michael Burroughs’ BMW e28 “Rusty Slammington” was a car you couldn’t just look past. Whether you loved or loathed it, you had to look. After reading the post on speedhunters just before the Easter break I was devastated. The car that inspired me to try and stance out my MK4 Jetta and almost buy a e30 and rust it out no longer existed.

Rusty was a car which made itself famous in both the internet world and magazines. With the crazy looks and jaw dropping low.

Recently a local car club known for the big meets and stanced out cars held a get together. Sitting in the dark, all by itself was a car that pulled me closer. It was Zak from StreetKarnage.com with his 1986 Volvo 240 rocking satin black paint, warhawk graphics and a rusted hood. Immediately I knew I had to shoot this car in memory of Rusty Slammington.

Sitting as low as it physically can in the rear it certainly has some belly scraping going on.

The rain started to fall heavily, but I wasn’t going to give up. The 5dmkII had been dripping wet in the past and it was about to relive that.
I had always wanted to do a rolling shot in the rain so off we went.

With it’s early 1980′s trunk, late 70′s front end, early 60′s lights and grill rolling on Simmons 17×7.5 on the fronts and 17×8.5 with a 25mm spacer on the rear it just flows together nicely.

Zak happens to drive his 240, I don’t know how after watching it bounce around in the mirror all the way to the shoot location.

And a few more shots from the day.

I hope that everything works out for Michael, I tip my hat to you good sir.
Thank you to Zak of StreetKarnage for letting me shoot the Volvo.

Dip it low, Crush.

This past weekend my buddy, Sy Pham, and I decided to go hit up the Honda-Tech meet in Dallas. After hanging out for a couple hours the police came and ended up forcing us to move to a secondary location due to the park we were at not being able to be double booked and causing parking problems. After moving to a shopping center parking lot, a group of Honda S2000′s caught our eye and we immediately made contact with the owners to set up a shoot.

Boom.

Tour por Haiti

4,500 miles on a bicycle, contemplate that for a few.

Right, now that is just what two young men are setting out to do. Abdiel & Erik are currently out on their journey touring the US of A, and they’re doing so in hopes that they can raise money for a good cause along the way.

I’ve known Abdiel for a few years now, he’s part of a group of VW enthusiasts that go by the name Club.Broke.Status, and he’s also quite the Vortex superstar (at least that’s what I’ve heard). When I heard that he was setting out on this journey and most likely passing through my area I knew I wanted to try to help them out however I could. I passed my info to Ryan Gravelle, also of C.B.S., to add to what I can assume was a growing contact list for Abdiel.

This past week on Monday 4/4, Abdiel and Erik made it roughly halfway through NY State and reached my Dad’s house in East Syracuse late that evening. They had a long ride that day and unfortunately had to start the day by packing up camp in the pouring rain. Upon arrival at my Dad & Step-mom’s house they had a chance to unpack some of their gear that got soaked earlier that morning.

Thanks to my Dad & step-mom Judi for cooking up some ziti for them, and laundering some of their clothes. And also letting them store their bikes/trailers & other gear in the garage for the night. That night they crashed at the apartment of a fellow local dubber, shouts to Pete!. Met them back at my Dads in the morning to prep for the next leg of the journey.

Tuesday 4/5 greated them with a mix of rain and snow to start the day. As they packed their trailers and prepped the bikes, Erik noticed a lose rear cartridge on his bike. Drove them over to a local bike shop to get that sorted out, after pumping air in the tires and getting dressed for the upcoming wet trek I bid them farewell and safe travels further on their journey.

Now that you’ve read all that, here’s some pics. Caught up with both of them on Route 5 outside of the Syracuse area in farm country and snapped a couple pics.

Erik, all business, cruising down the hill

Abdiel smiling after conquering the previous hill

After a late start to that days ride, they enjoyed some scenic views on their way to Seneca Falls, NY where I hooked them up with another local dubber that lives there. Thanks Todd & Cate for taking them in and feeding them well! The hospitality that has been offered to these ‘strangers’ makes me proud to call these people family and friends. Big ups to the VW community for helping out one of your own!

As of this past Sunday, 4/11, Abdiel & Erik have traveled 515 miles! They’ve been through the gamut of weather conditions, tis the season here in the Northeast. And they have also dealt with a fair share of technical difficulties with their bikes. But alas, they are still continuing on their journey and are currently passing through the state of OH.

It was a pleasure to meet Erik for the first time last week, I’ll forgive him for not being into VW’s/Cars like Abdiel and the rest of us are. Both Erik & Abdiel have graduated from their respective colleges and wanted to do this journey before moving on to the next stages of their lives. Erik has been working at an elementary school to save the money to be able to do this trip. While talking to both of them, Erik told a story of when he was in elementary school his teacher asked the class to draw a trip across the country on a map and how they would make the trip, and of course Erik chose a bike. This trip has been something he’s wanted to do since then, Abdiel on the other hand was coaxed into the trip by his great friend Erik. Kidding of course.

Upon the completion of their cross county trip, Abdiel is planning on going into the automotive service field that he just completed his schooling in. While Erik will be headed to California to attend Medical school. For the short time they were in my town and I was able to talk to both of them a good amount and it was great to be able to help them out a little. In talking to them its easy to see the things all of us take for granted on a giving day are things they are doing without at times, simple things like a roof over your head or a nice warm meal (not cooked on a camp stove) to a warm shower or a comfortable bed to sleep in.

I could go on and on about them, but back to what I mentioned at the beginning of this post. After they decided on this trip they wanted to also try to help raise money for a good cause. They’re hoping to raise money for Partners In Health specifically in Haiti to help provide medical care and vaccinations for the earthquake ravaged country. So if you have a few spare dollars to help their cause, check out Erik’s blog with more info and links to donate: Bike for Haiti

And also check out Abdiel’s Tumblr blog that he usually updates regularly throughout the day: Cross Country Bike Trip 2011

Here’s a map that shows their route and most recent location.

Yellow line is their route, Red line Indicates Location As of 4/9

If you happen to live/work/be near their route path and they are going to be passing through don’t hesitate to contact Abdiel or Erik via their blogs if you want to help them out along their way.

And, if you’ve read up to this point, please share this post on your Facebook page/Twitter/Tumblr/Myspace? to help them in their cause!

Thanks for reading,
Shake
