Vinny’s Banana Hammock
by: | June 8, 2011 | One Comment

Who doesn’t like a car that’s as low as it is bright? Vinny picked up this GLI back in April of 2009. The car went through a few transitional phases; one being slammed on coilovers, and the most recent being on air suspension to go lower and have more control over the car.

Performance mods include: APR Stage 2, APR rear sway bar, Forge DV, BSH intake, Hawk pads, Magnaflow exhaust, and an APR downpipe.

Dutch MK6

Patrick, who is better known on the forums as PVPMK, owns what is easily one of my favorite MKVI’s to date. It’s simple, it’s clean, and puts the majority of the current MKVI scene to shame. It’s currently sporting AMG wheels, a US spec front bumper, air suspension including Easy Street Autopilot management, Dectane D-LITE black headlights, leather interior, and a re trimmed headliner and pillars. I’m sure I missed some parts in there somewhere, but you get the gist of it!

MK1 Love
by: | June 1, 2011 | One Comment

Though I haven’t owned a Euro car in a while, ever since I moved out to Texas I try to keep in touch with old friends and make new ones by attending the regular meets. By doing that I was able to meet Will, owner of the green MK1 Jetta, and I actually met Justin, owner of the silver MK1 Jetta, through our Facebook page. Both of these guys are doing the state of Texas proud in their super clean Jettas. Both Justin and Will met up with photographer, Daniel Baum, and were awesome enough to send me over the photos to post on the blog.

Will's MK1.

Justin's mk1

Photographers Spotlight: Carter Nichols
by: | May 26, 2011 | 8 Comments

Having these types of entries, featuring photographers in the scene, really help to get a feel for what kind of talent is out there, and possibly motivate novice photographers such as myself. My first entry is on Carter Nichols. This guy has always had a spot with me just for the fact that he has good fundamentals and the right eye. To achieve the results that he does for the minimal equipment he uses is amazing. Light painting would be where he makes his presence known.  Sharp images, with the right colors and tones to match the emotion of the capture is what Carter seems to do so well in my eye.  Not only is this guy talented, he is always reaching out and helping anyone he can making himself always available which, to me, is a major deal. It’s not only about having the ill shots, but helping the photography community uplift itself at the same time. That deserves a major kudos to Carter.

Name: Carter Nichols

Age: 21

Location: Norfolk, VA / Washington D.C.

Hometown: Woodbridge, Va

What’s in your bag?

-Canon 7D

-Canon 18-135 IS 3.5-5.6

-Canon 430ex II

-CPL filter

Ha, sorry, I don’t have a lot of equipment.

If you could describe your style to anyone else what would you describe it as?

I’d say that I am subject realist, but lighting surrealist. I love leaving the car as natural as possible, but using light to expose the subject in an unnatural way.

What are key things about a location that you look for?

I’d say most of all the subject has to fit into the location. You wouldn’t shoot a Ferrari behind a grocery store next to the dumpster, well at least you shouldn’t ha. Finding a spot that compliments the cars color, style, and shape can really add the extra appeal to the final product. I also try to stay away from anything that looks like it could draw attention away from the subject. Yes, there are some cool art statues downtown but I wouldn’t take a picture of a car next to them.

What’s your favorite subject to photograph?

Cars for sure. They’re quiet, they stay still, they don’t ask to see every shot after you take it, and they’re amazing machines built by awesome people. Now drivers on the other hand, haha just kidding!

Most awkward moment during a shoot?

I would say the most awkward was having a gun pulled on me by a security guard. He asked us to leave, to which we complied. My car was behind him so I started walking towards it at which point he pulled out a gun. I stopped and he asked me what I was coming near him for, I pointed at my car and said, “You told me to leave so I was going to my car.” The silent pause that followed was probably the most awkward I have ever felt with a camera in my hand, ha.

The most exciting time?

Most exciting time I had was taking rolling shots of a 7 series BMW while driving up the twisting roads of Skyline Dr. Completely ignoring almost being thrown from the car from each sharp curve to get the shot was a serious rush.

One of the best captures YOU think you’ve taken? And why?

I still think one of my best shots to date is my light painting of a Shelby Cobra kit car. I had never light painted before and within 5 minutes of trying I created this picture which was so above anything I had ever done before. It was really a turning point for my photography and ever since I have been striving to match it. Some say I have matched and surpassed that picture but to me it is the golden egg in my collective work.

What keeps you motivated to shoot? And who got you into the hobby or made you more motivated?

Simply put, the cars & the people. When I first got into the automotive scene after picking up my GTI, I was just in awe of all the great things people could do/did to their cars and I fell in love with all things automotive. Then when I started shooting I also had a really supportive group of friends and family who admired my work (even when I knew it was bad). Since then I have just been consistently shooting and improving and the same great people who were there at the beginning are there now. So I definitely owe a lot to them!

Other Favorite Photographers?

Samuel Dobbins

Sean Klingelhoefer

Adam Elmakias

These guys are the masters. They have perfected the craft of photography from business to post processing and they are everything I hope to be one day. Definitely a huge inspiration to my work.

Where can you be reached? And your work be seen?

[email protected] is my email, you can contact me for a shoot, advice, or just to chat. Whatever floats your boat ha. You can see my work on flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/cartern/ I am in the process of putting together a website as well!

What Software and computer setup are you running?

I am using Adobe CS5 on an Apple Macbook.

Any post processing routines you do such as listen to music or habits you usually do? If music what artists do you listen too?

Arizona sweet tea + Underoath radio on Pandora, is how you will find me editing 99% of the time.

Any tips for post processing or Good Habits for photography? Or blogs/websites that show techniques you use?

Get out there and shoot, shoot, shoot. Never stop shooting and trying new things.

Shoutouts:

This said shootouts, but I think you meant shout outs.

I’d like to just thank a few people.

First, my girlfriend Alexandra. She is always there on shoots regardless of the weather, time of day, etc. She gets on me to edit and helps out while I am shooting. Definitely wouldn’t be where I am without her.

I’d like to thank Russell Taylor and Klutchonline.com. Klutch was the first company I started shooting for and really helped me get my name out there. It’s a great team of people working together to make quality material & content.

Lastly, the fans. I know there probably aren’t a lot of you out there, but I am definitely thankful for all the people who have shown me love and support since my first picture. It truly means the world to me, Thank you.
