Don’t Fruit the Beer Brah
Fruited beer catches a bad rap… but this stuff is tops
It is a giant misconception that adding fruit to beer or drinking a fruit flavored beer is girly and degrading to your manhood. Historically fruit was used as the primary source of sugar and flavor of beer. The ample amounts of sugar in fruit serve as the catalyst for fermentation. Beer has deep seeded origins with fruit, from the beginnings of lambics (very sugary and sweet) to what is now a majority of various artificial fruit flavors.
I could go on and on about the history of beer, but lets get down to the good. I present to you, arguably one of the best fruit flavored beers today, Wachusett Brewery Blueberry Ale.
Wachusett Brewery is a small facility located in the quiet town of Westminster, Massachusetts. Started by three WPI graduates who decided they hated engineering, but loved brewing beer. The brewery was started in a family barn, and then moved to their current facility. Given the capacity they operate as a micro-brewery. They have several other great brews, but for now lets just focus on the Blueberry Ale.
Wachusett Blueberry Ale is served in three forms; on Tap, in bottles and in their awesome growlers (pictured above.) When opening up a bottle, you get the smell of blueberries right out of the gate. Pouring it into a glass you notice its rich golden color. It’s light and flavorful, but not too overpowering with artificial flavor. Some of the best descriptions I’ve heard are “it’s like eating blueberry pancakes” or “its like drinking a blueberry muffin.” It is light enough to be able to sit and have a couple, but crisp finishing, so you know your drinking something quality.
Unfortunately Wachusett Blueberry is only sold in a few states right now, with dreams of expanding in the future. Currently you can find this in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island . Next time you find yourself standing at the packie, looking to try something new, grab yourself a 6 pack and give it a try. You’ll be surprised at how good this stuff really is.
